What is Panchang?
Panchang is the traditional Hindu calendar almanac that provides daily astronomical and astrological information. The word "Panchang" comes from "Pancha" (five) and "Anga" (limbs) — referring to the five elements that define each day.
The five elements are: Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (luni-solar combination), Karana (half of a tithi), and Vara (day of the week). Together, these provide a comprehensive picture of the day's quality.
The five elements of Panchang
Tithi
The lunar day — the angular relationship between the Moon and Sun. There are 30 tithis in a lunar month, each lasting approximately 12 hours.
Nakshatra
The lunar mansion — the Moon's position in the 27 nakshatras. Each nakshatra has its own qualities and influences.
Yoga
A luni-solar combination based on the angular distance between Sun and Moon. There are 27 yogas, each with specific characteristics.
Karana
Half of a tithi — there are 11 karanas that repeat in a cycle. They indicate practical activities suitable for the day.
Vara
The day of the week, ruled by a specific planet. Each day has its own planetary influence and suitable activities.
Tara Bala (Nakshatra transit)
Tara Bala is the relative position of the Moon's nakshatra at birth versus its current nakshatra. It is one of the sixfold (Shadvarga) strength calculations used in Muhurat and daily timing.
Shubh and Ashubh timing
Panchang provides guidance on auspicious (Shubh) and inauspicious (Ashubh) periods throughout the day. These are based on the combined influence of tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana. Important activities are traditionally started during Shubh periods.
Accuracy and limitations
- Panchang provides general daily timing — it is not a substitute for personalized Muhurat.
- Calculation accuracy depends on the correct location and timezone.
- Different Panchang systems may show slight variations in tithi/nakshatra boundaries.
- For important events, a personalized Muhurat based on your birth chart is recommended.
