MUHURAT
Auspicious Timing
Select the right moment for important events using traditional Panchang-based timing.
What is Muhurat?
Muhurat (मुहूर्त) is the Vedic science of selecting auspicious time windows for important activities. Just as a farmer plants seeds at the right season, Vedic tradition holds that beginning significant actions at the right time supports better outcomes.
Muhurat selection considers the Panchang elements — Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (star), Yoga, Karana and Vara (day of the week) — along with planetary positions and transits. The goal is to align your action with favourable cosmic conditions.
Common events for which muhurat is consulted include weddings, housewarming (Griha Pravesh), business launches, starting education, purchasing property, vehicle purchase, and religious ceremonies.
Types of muhurat
- Amrit Muhurat — considered one of the most auspicious for new beginnings and important ventures.
- Shubh Muhurat — general auspicious windows suitable for most positive activities.
- Labh Muhurat — favourable for financial transactions, purchases and business activities.
- Char Muhurat — transient auspicious moments useful for routine tasks.
- Muhurat avoids Rahu Kalam, Yamaghantak and other inauspicious periods that could undermine the purpose of the event.

The five limbs of the Panchang
The Panchang has five limbs — Tithi, Vara (day), Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana. Auspicious times are determined on the basis of these five. Knowing the character of these five, and the many auspicious or inauspicious time results produced by their combinations, is absolutely essential. Muhurat is derived through knowledge of the auspiciousness or inauspiciousness of time.
Samanya (general) Muhurat
Muhurat is of two kinds — the first is general (Samanya). A muhurat in which Tithi, Vara, Nakshatra etc. are not considered is called a general muhurat. Examples — Choghadiya, Abhijit etc.
Vishesha (specific) Muhurat
The second is the specific (Vishesha) muhurat. A muhurat in which Tithi, Vara, Nakshatra etc. are considered according to the native's Rashi and Nakshatra is called a specific muhurat. Examples — marriage, joining service, vehicle purchase etc.
Muhurat selection uses the same DE440 Panchang engine as our daily calculations.
