What is auspicious timing?

Auspicious timing is the Vedic science of selecting favourable time windows for important activities. Just as a farmer plants seeds in the right season, Vedic tradition holds that beginning significant actions at the right time supports better outcomes.

Auspicious-time selection considers the daily-almanac elements — lunar day, lunar mansion, planetary combination, half-day segment and weekday — along with planetary positions and transits. The goal is to align your action with favourable cosmic conditions.

Common events for which auspicious timing is consulted include weddings, housewarming (Griha Pravesh), business launches, starting education, purchasing property, vehicle purchase, and religious ceremonies.

Types of auspicious timing

  • Nectar timing — considered one of the most auspicious windows for new beginnings and important ventures.
  • Favourable timing — general auspicious windows suitable for most positive activities.
  • Gain timing — favourable for financial transactions, purchases and business activities.
  • Movable timing — transient auspicious moments useful for routine tasks.
  • Auspicious-time selection avoids the Rahu and Yama periods and other inauspicious windows that could undermine the purpose of the event.

The five elements of the daily almanac

The daily almanac has five elements — lunar day, weekday, lunar mansion, planetary combination and half-day segment. Auspicious times are determined on the basis of these five. Knowing their character and the many favourable or unfavourable results produced by their combinations is essential. Auspicious timing is derived through knowledge of the quality of time.

General auspicious timing

Auspicious timing is of two kinds — the first is general. A time selection in which lunar day, weekday and lunar mansion are not considered is called general timing. Examples include day-and-night periods and Abhijit timing.

Specific auspicious timing

The second is specific timing. A selection in which lunar day, weekday and lunar mansion are considered according to the native's sign and birth star is called specific timing. Examples include marriage, joining service and vehicle purchase.

Auspicious-time selection uses the same DE440 daily-almanac engine as our daily calculations.
