What is a daily almanac?
The traditional Hindu daily almanac provides astronomical and astrological information. Its name refers to the five elements that define each day.
The five elements are: lunar day, lunar mansion, planetary combination, half-day segment and weekday. Together, these provide a comprehensive picture of the day's quality.
The five elements of the daily almanac
Lunar Day
The lunar day — the angular relationship between the Moon and Sun. There are 30 lunar days in a lunar month, each lasting approximately 12 hours.
Lunar Mansion
The Moon's position in one of 27 lunar mansions. Each mansion has its own qualities and influences.
Planetary Combination
A luni-solar combination based on the angular distance between Sun and Moon. There are 27 combinations, each with specific characteristics.
Half-day Segment
Half of a lunar day — there are 11 segments that repeat in a cycle. They indicate practical activities suitable for the day.
Vara
The day of the week, ruled by a specific planet. Each day has its own planetary influence and suitable activities.
Tara Bala (lunar-mansion transit)
Tara Bala is the relative position of the Moon's birth mansion versus its current mansion. It is one of the sixfold (Shadvarga) strength calculations used in auspicious timing and daily planning.
Favourable and Unfavourable Timing
The daily almanac provides guidance on favourable and unfavourable periods throughout the day. These are based on the combined influence of lunar day, lunar mansion, planetary combinations and half-day segments. Important activities are traditionally started during favourable periods.
Accuracy and limitations
- The daily almanac provides general timing — it is not a substitute for personalized auspicious timing.
- Calculation accuracy depends on the correct location and timezone.
- Different almanac systems may show slight variations in lunar-day or lunar-mansion boundaries.
- For important events, personalized auspicious timing based on your birth chart is recommended.
